Newly renovated is this 1977 Yamaha XS 650D. We took it in as an unusually complete and well preserved original bike. The chrome is outstanding original as is the engine. The fenders, rims, and spokes are way too nice to relace/rechrome unless the owner wanted a 99 point AMCA judged bike. The mufflers are gorgeous, probably the best preserved originals I have ever seen on a '76-'79 Standard. The rear baffles were removed resulting in a throatier yet not obnoxious sound. We repaired/replaced/refinished the various paint/body, mechanical and electrical systems as needed for a bike that spent many years in garage storage.
The paint is new as described in our website. The inside and outside of the tank and side covers were sandblasted. The tank was lined with Por-15. These pieces were then epoxy seal/primed, then primed with sandable urethane surfacer, then Maxi maroon mid coat, clear coated to seal, graphics applied, then more clear urethane for the final top coats. The panels were then color sanded and polished for a very high quality finish. The frame and other low gloss black chassis parts are original and in excellent condition. There are a few small blemishes on the frame paint but not enough to refinish. All our paint products are PPG.
The carburetors and petcocks were ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt. Valves, cam chain tension, and timing were adjusted and set. The engine has 160lbs of compression both sides. It is smooth and quiet. The bike goes through the gears without issues, the clutch lever is smooth and efficient, and the clutch does not slip or chatter. The front brake has been freshened with a rebuilt caliper, new pads, and new master cylinder. The forks were drained, cleaned, inspected, and new seals installed with fresh fluid. The drive chain was replaced along with the rear sprocket. The front sprocket is perfect used. It has stock gearing of 17/34. The tires have lots of tread without weather checking, so we left them alone. All the electrical functions work as intended. The mileage at this point is 16,442. I will ride the bike as part of my collection, adding a hundred or so miles each year to maintain the bike. Although it is not a 99 point show bike, it rides and appears about as well as one would want for a rider. It is a beauty.
